In case you haven’t heard, the flu is raging more so than normal this year. Some states, like New York have gone as far as declaring a “flu emergency.” The CDC reports that 20 children have already died during this flu season.
If you haven’t gotten the vaccine, consider it. Especially for those under age 5, pregnant women, those 65 and older, and those who have other medical conditions.
A few precautions to help you stay healthy:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
- Practice good health habits. Get plenty of sleep and exercise, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat healthy food.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- If you are sick with flu-like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine.
Coming down with the flu could mean 2 weeks of down time. Or it should mean 2 weeks anyway. Realize that while the animals need to be fed and things need to be tended to, pushing yourself too hard while you’re sick only prolongs the illness. And working while tired or not feeling well puts you at risk for other farm accidents.
Don’t be a super hero. Rest and please, please stay home to avoid spreading it to others.
